Recommended Strand Counts for Recurve Bowstrings

Strand count is one of those topics where archers often have strong personal preferences, but there are some fairly common starting points for target recurve strings.

The key thing to remember is that strand count is not just about strength. It can also affect arrow speed, string diameter, nock fit, stability, feel at full draw, and noise or vibration.

BCY 652 Spectra

BCY 652 Spectra is thicker than 8125 and produces a larger string diameter for the same strand count.

Draw Weight Typical Strands
20–30lb 12–14
30–40lb 14–16
40–50lb 16–18
50lb+ 18–20

A lot of recurve archers who shoot 18 strands of 8125 will shoot around 16 strands of 652 Spectra to achieve a similar diameter and nock fit.

Angel Majesty

Angel Majesty tends to feel slightly firmer, is very stable, and is often built with lower strand counts than 8125.

Draw Weight Typical Strands
20–30lb 14
30–40lb 14–16
40–50lb 16
50lb+ 18

Many target archers shoot around 16 strands of Angel Majesty, where they might previously have used 18 strands of 8125.

Fast Flight Plus

Fast Flight Plus is a classic string material with a slightly more substantial feel than 8125. It is usually built with fewer strands than 8125 because the individual strands are thicker.

Draw Weight Typical Strands
20–30lb 12–14
30–40lb 14–16
40–50lb 16–18
50lb+ 18

For many recurve setups, 16 strands of Fast Flight Plus is a good general starting point.

BCY 8125

BCY 8125 is relatively thin and lightweight, so it often uses higher strand counts.

Draw Weight Typical Strands
20–30lb 14–16
30–40lb 16–18
40–50lb 18–20
50lb+ 20–22

Many target recurves end up around 18 strands of 8125.
